About Mangochi Town
Mangochi is actually located at the first bridge point of the Shire River, between Lake Malawi and Malombe. However, it is particularly associated with Lake Malawi as it is the town that marks the southern end of this vast body of water. Previously called Fort Johnston, it was set up to limit the movement of slave traffic north towards the lake and Zanzibar. According to 2018 official government data, 68,453 inhabitants live.
