About Likoma
Likoma is one of the 28 counties of the African country Malawi. Likoma is located in the Northern region and its center city is the city of Likoma with the same name. The district consists of two small islands, Likoma and Chizumulu, 10 km from each other, and is the smallest district in the country in terms of surface area. The islands, which are located on Lake Malawi, in the region under the domination of Mozambique, are in this form the settlement area within the borders of other countries of Malawi. The district is 46 km away from Chizumulu to the mainland part and 55 km from the closest mainland port. In contrast, the mainland of Mozambique is 5 km from the islands.
On the eastern shore of the lake is Likoma Island, a small piece of Malawi land in Mozambique waters. The Central African University Mission (mission of David Livingstone) established its headquarters in Likoma in the 1880s to combat the slave trade using routes across Lake Malawi. Because of this history, Likoma was held by Malawi after World War II when the lake was politically divided and the surrounding waters became Mozambique.
